Hey this for sure is a real problem! My ducks will play in ANY water they find even thought they have a pool.
As for the feed water, I wrapped a large 4 inch deep horse feed pan with 1/4 inch hard wear cloth and and put the water dispenser on top of that. It worked! I had way less spillage and 3/4's of the pen stayed dry. They still play there but the splashed water will fall into the feeder dish and then I just lift that out and spill out the mess.
I got the feeder dish a tractor supply for around $8.00 and it has saved me well over that in bedding and work, well worth it.
I fixed the hard wear cloth around the dish and fastened it to itself on the underside with tie straps. That way they could stand on it (and they did) and it would not give way, also it made sure there were no sharp pointy edged from the hard wear cloth they might get hurt on.
