what is the best way to start a breeding program?

I would begin with asking myself If the starter stock is the right one to get your start. Assuming you did some research and bought eggs or chicks from someone that has a history of showing birds and or has other folks showing their strain you have a start.

In terms of knowing which ones to cull and which to keep, it is a matter of understanding the standard in each breed. I imagine that you have a copy of the standard of perfection and that you have a good picture in your mind about the faults and DQ's?

Assuming you have the above in place, the next thing I would do is see if you can find a breeder to help you go through your birds. In my area this is very difficult as there are few breeders and even fewer that lend a hand. I have however gone to shows and just hung around and ask questions. If you get the right person at the right time in the right mood there can be a ton of information for you.

I had a guy at a local show go through his bantam wyandottes and even though I have large fowl, I learned a lot by having him point out some of the finer points in terms of both color and type;

Good luck
