Hey all! So got 2 dozen fertile maran eggs at a local auction. Well yesterday was hatch day and I only got 6. A friend of mine got 3 dozen and only hatched 10. So I was unsure if it was the eggs or the breeding that was the problem. I think this little chick answered my question. I heard it trying to pip for a while and now know why it was unable. It has such a bad case of sissor beak, also missing an eye with a deformed skull.
So my suspicion is with the breeding. What do you all think unhealthy breeders or inbreeding?

Scissor beak (sometimes also called cross beak or crossed beak), is a deformity that can occur in baby chicks. ... Scissor beak can be caused by inferior genetics, an injury to the chick's skull causing the grow plates to not grow at the same rate or incorrect incubation temperature.

That’s so sad! :(

could be inbreeding, but sometimes the process just goes wrong, either because of errors during meiosis when the egg is fertilised or when the embryo is in development.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm thinking bad genes too. I had a batch of my own olive eggers I put in the same incubator a few days later. They are all hatching now on time and look great. I did cull the little guy, there was no way he could of survived. I'm not keeping any of these maran chicks. I have a friend that still wants them. She knows the story just wants them for eggs.
