What is the difference between layer feed and starter feed

At what point in their growth, after hatching, should a chick be introduced to layer feed. Are there negative results feeding a hatchling layer feed too early?

all the books say 18 weeks for the switch, i've always been told it because of the calcium in the layer feed, but I've also been told 8 to 10 week old chicks can have layer but i've not tried it. I stick to chick, then grower , then layer, for me its the protein, 23%, 18 to20%, then 16%

Chicks should only be fed starter/grower feed for 17 to 18 weeks of age the switched over to complete egg layer feed. The chicks need the higher protein while growing.

yes but its not a big difference, its more the protein, and the calcium.

You can feed starter till you see the first egg, actually. Best to feed starter a longer period than layer feed too early, IMO.
