what is the difference between RIR and production RIR?

Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with production reds. In most folks mind that is the standard for Rhode Island Reds. I have a number of them and like them very much, but as I continued to research I found these brick like reds and decided to head in that direction.

In horses, dogs, cattle and now in chickens I have always said "If I am going to feed them, I want to like looking at them".

And I enjoy looking at stock that I know is clearly within the confirmation standard of the breed. I dont show (with the exception of horses from time to time) but like to have animals that give me a sense of pride when I look at them. This for me prompts me to seek the good breeders. It is a bit of hobby and challenge for me to find the folks that breed the good stuff.

The beautiful thing about chickens is that when you find them they are still relatively inexpensive. Finding the perfect horse and then finding out it is 20-30 thousand dollars can quickly change one's attititude about how bad I need that horse. LOL

You would know by looking at them as stated in this thread., Also if you purchased them from any standard hatchery they are production. If you did not seek out exhibition style specifically the odds are great that you have production reds. They are still sold as Rhode Island Reds, are great layers and great chickens, they just would not meet the standard for the show ring. That is a bird of a different color that is for sure.

Nothing wrong with Production Reds for eggs and fun. I wanted the dark ones for eye candy. In the future, I may breed them, though right now, I have other projects taking my attention and no room for an extra breed. I just like looking at them-they are amazingly beautiful.
