what is the friendliest breed

Quote:
ABSOLUTELY!!!!! You must be very hands on and gentle from the start! That is when the bird is imprinted with the concept of people being safe and non threatening. It is VITAL that you be very gentle, calm, talk softly and handle as much as possible until they learn to trust you! Almost any animal will respond to this kind of upbringing. It starts from the egg! Yes, there are some birds that are geneticaly less highstrung than others. Of course your game fowel have been bred for alertness and vigor! But there is the exception to every breed. Good and Bad. It's really a matter of how they are raised, more than how they are hatched.

Good Luck and God Bless!

Out of three birds I have adopted when they were older 2 of them were some of the friendliest birds I have every had. Coal was a little OEGB that would snuggle up to your and whine to get your attention. Coco is my little ankle attachment that follows me everywhere in and outside of the house

I only have breeds that are nice and personable. They have to be to live with me

My cochins hands down are the most loving. They snuggle up by my feet when i feed. ill be standing there and i have two bantam cochins huddled up by my feet, but all of my chickens are very nice and personable

Speckled Sussex, Bantam Ameraucanas, Bantam Cochins, Seramas, and Swedish Ducks are all very sweet birds

Looks like many posters are saying their own breeds are the friendliest!

i'll just chime in and say, from my VERY limited experience, Barred Rocks are extremely friendly. I got BRs and RIRs last spring as day-old chicks. The BRs have their individual personalities, but all are very friendly. They were the first to come to us and let us pick them up. The RIRs were flightier, and once they got older, noisier. They have a really loud, obnoxious bawking thing they do. One we got rid of late last fall b/c she started pecking the others' combs, to the point of bleeding. I couldn't have that when they were going to be confined all winter, so sold her.

Our remaining RIR is so irritating, we have vowed never to have RIRs again. I just adore my BRs - and I was never a "pet" person!

As an aside, a long-time chicken keeper who advised me when I first got chickens had (and still has) many different breeds - but no RIRs. When she heard I had some, said she once had RIRs and never liked them. That was when mine were just weeks old, and I thought it was just her. Now I've come around to her point-of-view.

I have a whole bunch of different breeds and here's my 2 cents on their temperament:

I've handled all of them a lot as chicks and hang out with them every day. They free-range all day.
Let me say upfront that they all eat treats out of my hand and come running when I get home, so the "aloof" category is beyond that aspect.

- White silkie: slightly aloof (5 eggs/week, when not broody, 2nd season)
- SP Wyandotte: very pushy, a bit aloof, chases birds, squirrels and even deer out of the yard (6 eggs/week, 2nd season)
- Red Leghorn: aloof, talkative (6eggs/week, 2nd season)
- SS HAmburg: roo is very friendly, takes great care of the girls, non-aggressive (doesn't like small kids chasing his girls, though)
hen is very chatty, follows me everywhere, jumps in my lap, really smart as chickens go (6 eggs/week, 2nd season)

- Cuckoo Maran: pushy, dominant, demanding, very curious, follows me around, begs a lot (6eggs/week, 2nd season)
- Golden Lakenvelder: VERY curious, active, chatty, doesn't mind getting picked up, does tricks for treats, can be pushy (6eggs/week, 1st season)
- EE: aloof (6 eggs/week, 1st season)
- Welsummer: dominant, demanding, pushy, can be noisy, very curious, likes to be close but not picked up, needs to tell EVERYBODY (6eggs/week, 1 season)

Our most friendly ones have been Barred Rock and RIR. We had an EE that was really friendly too. The BR chick that I have right now is so friendly that she jumps onto me when I walk up to the brooder.

Sussex, great allaround chickens, plus they love to follow you around and see what your doing. They even gotta see what my husband is doing while he is using the chain saw...
