I have my buck with my does all the time EXCEPT right after they kid.....yes he was in the pasture while they kidded out.
I do not pen up until after they kid....then I put them in a stall for at least 3 days for them to bond, be sure kids are nursing, doe is fed and fine and kids get good standing on their feet. Being so little I give them that 3 days to know Momma.......then out in the herd and they do fine.
When all my does kid out (all the same time--have only 30 now)---then I put the buck in his own pasture for about 2 months. I want those does not being bred, sniffed, bothered by a billy. Yup, he sure bothers them and it is most important to give the kids their time with Momma. And after 2 months when kids are are 1 month from being shipped to sale, I put the buck back in...he doesn't bother the kids and the kids are more than stout enough to move out of the way and such.
He's quite bossy but he loves his girls.... I'm just afraid he'll want to be all over the situation... He's very nosey....
I would never call him aggressive but stern to the girls to let them know he has to be first.... He's even pulled my DH's shirt tail tag to get his attention for treats.... DH wanted to feed treats to one of the girls first....
I ignore my bucks. Just basic handling cause with my big Boer goats getting 225-250 lbs they are monsters. So I do little with them but the basics.
I made the mistake of making a pet out of a little billy. Played head pushing games and such and when he was older,,,,,wow, I always lost..>LOL---I learned not to do that again!
You can just watch the situation and then make the call. A doe does hold her ground also. She will act accordingly to let the buck there is a time and place for everything.
I think any animal whose having babies will do it at the least convinent time for the owner (I totally agree with all the other folks here) I would just add depending on the temps I would put you lady inside to kids My best friend had a girl kid early last week in -30 degree weather. she said she went out to find another doe to bring in and there they were dead... still steaming....sad! good luck....
The most inconvenient and wrong place and time. We have one that loves to jump on and out of every pen. She got out of her pen and went under the truck after we had come home from church. She began to kid and it started to rain. That was okay because we had just come home and had not planned to go out until youth at night. Well then one decided to be backwards and stuck....I could not fit under the axle were she had placed herself. My son had to crawl under the truck and help, he was not happy nor had he ever done it before. Me coaching him while getting wet and cold. New experiences all the time....with goats...well any animal
