Pied genes exist in nearly every animal that's been bred for awhile. They are rather unpredictable unless bred to mark a certain way. They can appear in all different forms and there seem to be many of these genes in the same species that you can't tell apart. They also seem to come with many unknown modifier genes which gets even more confusing so you can't just go by how the pied markings look on various animals.

I think the article argues that pied does not cause white but white requires pied along with another gene. They make the argument based on the fact white doesn't exist in some countries where pied exists. If pied caused white by itself then anytime you bred several pieds you'd have whites and also any time you bred a white to a nonpied you'd get pieds. Apparently this doesn't always happen and one can exist without the other so that doesn't hold true.

I've had pearl, and I now have pied, one white, purple and lavender. I thought I would like the lavender the best but after they randomly bred this year for the first time, I got several more pieds. I've decided off all of them I really like the pied best.

I now have to thin out the flock to keep more pieds.

If I had to pick one favorite color it would be Royal Purple, but I like them all. We've had Lavender, Pied, White, Opaline, Coral Blue, RP, and of course, Pearl. Down to only 4 now, plus the 6 eggs in the 'bator. Wish I had a huge aviary so I could keep some cooped up but happy, they just don't do as well as I'd like here (they will go over to my neighbor's house, where his dog will kill them, about which I can't really get mad.)

We have 2 pearl, 2 coral blue & 2 lavender. We have two pied and two royal purple keets in the brooder box - can't wait to see what they grow up to be (would love to get some brown ones). All of them are beautiful in their own way - and I think their differences compliment each other - I love

having a mixed flock.

a coral blue (their underside looks bluer in less sunshine) with a blue marans hen behind and a pearl guinea behind her (and an ancona on the right):

I haven't found a favorite yet but so far I love the color of my lavenders. I love all the light colors though I know it isn't safe for them like that out free ranging.
Maybe one day I will have a lot more colors and find a fav. Ha! I think I will always love them all.
