There is no one proper size.

Different people have very different opinions on this topic because of climate differences, chicken personality differences, differences in what you are trying to achieve with your chickens, and differences in what you consider ok living conditions for chickens.

A reasonably comfy coop in most circumstances would be like 4 sq ft per chicken indoor and 8-10 sq ft per chicken in the run (or free range); but not everyone fits into these "most circumstances".

Basically, if it works for you, then it's the proper size; if it doesn't, it wasn't

Good luck, have fun,

Pat, back in town and finally with the computer fixed (I think)

Have read on here not to house turkeys with chickens. Do not build small or you are likely to regret it according to so many posts on this forum. I never yet read one post that complained of having too large of a coop.

Same holds true for run sizes.
