Hi all, I recently got 2 button quails. They were sold to me as male and female, however they live more like 'roommates' rather than 'a couple'. I know that the one is 100% a male ( he is the normal blue-ish type with the white bib on his throat). Please help me out with the sex of the silver quail? If not, I will have to check the vent, I am just avoiding this as they are still quite skittish.
See attached photo.
Thank you in advance ♡

If it is you will need more females if the cock turns active.
I will be on the lookout, it is really really hard to come by females here where I live. They are more often than not sold only in pairs. It is also almost winter here. Do they lay eggs all year round or do they have specific vreeding seasons?

I don't keep buttons (yet) so take my advice with as much salt as you need. I believe silver button quail can be feather sexed, but I don't know if your quail is silver, or if it's a similar color that's not sexable. It doesn't look like your bird has the male bib marking or rusty (or pink) vent/belly feathers, so I'm leaning towards female.

Button quail are typically kept in pairs. Your quail might be too young, two males, or too not-in-love with each other.

I appreciate everyone's input, thank you for responding. They seem to get along fine, they eat together, forage together, strech out in the sun together and even cuddle up at night. I think they are still rather young andI will wait it out to see if I can figure it out. The birds are happy and right now, that is all that matters.
