I have a Rhode Island Red hen that is a prolific layer. She's beautiful, healthy in every way until you turn her upside down. Her vent is always wet and she has a hard patch of bald skin on her stomach. About a year ago she had a clutch of chicks. It was a large clutch and they all survived and were very healthy. She eats, drinks and gets around well. She just looks very nasty from the bottom. Is there something I can do about this? She was a good mother to her eggs and very rarely got off the clutch. She lost a bit of weight while sitting on the clutch. What should I do? None of the other chickens she's with has developed this condtion. Her feathers on top look shiny and healthy. Is there a risk of this spreading to the rest of the flock and are her eggs at risk for infection or disease?

I am guessing it might be what is called "vent gleet" here, though I've never dealt with it. I gather it's a combination of conditions or types of infections. It is mentioned in an article that I turned up on a search in the learning center just now. This method might not work in all cases but should at least help in many, and is at least harmless:

I imagine you'd find a good number of threads in Emergencies as well, with a search.
