What is this for? (1970s house edition)

My 1970 house has this strange little window. It is in between the laundry room and kitchen, right next to the door. It has a hookup that looks like it is for a landline phone. Im wondering was this just a little window area for a telephone? It has always struck me as odd and Ive never seen another one like it. I added the clear plastic you are seeing, it was just open when we moved in. You could stick stuff right through it, like a serving window. Does anybody know what its true purpose was?

Phone station. A tabletop rotary phone likely sat there. Odds are that wasn't originally a laundry room.

Back when there was no such thing as cordless phones! That would have been a nice addition to the home so you could talk on the phone while doing the laundry or cooking.

Exactly, but ours was black, leased from Bell.

I have my grandmother's rotary (it was brown) that has its "lease" information still on it. We had rotary service for decades because my mother refused to pay for touch tone service -- it was a few dimes more a month!
