What is this fruit/tree/bush thing

To me, it looks very reminiscent of wild mango or perhaps Marian plum (Bouea burmanica--native to southeast Asia, also called mango plum). You have two apparently dissimilar photos of the leaves, however, and one of the photos looks more mango-like while the other looks more like cherry or elm or something. I have been unable to find a perfect match, based on the photos, and would be quite surprised to find anything so mango-like or Marian plum-like in Minnesota--where it appears you hail from. My best guess, then, is that it is some type of plum. In any case, I highly doubt they are poisonous, and would not fear to have my chickens under such a tree. Chickens seldom take much interest in fruits of this nature in any case.

You did quite well to cut straight through that pit!

Damson Plum, I think. And they come in several colors, you can tell ripeness when they get soft and turn loose from the tree without pulling much. Watch for wasps when the fruit gets ripe, too. I wish I had such a healthy looking plum tree!
