What is this hanging off baby chick?

When I took it out it did get a drink of water on its own. But it goes right back under mom, and she doesn’t seem to be trying to show it how to eat or drink yet. Or encouraging it…she seems annoyed when baby chick is out from under her. I have no idea what’s normal behavior.

Did this chick hatch yesterday? Is The mom sitting on more eggs?
Chicks can survive just fine for a couple days without food and water so if he's a fresh hatch it's really not a concern yet.
Broody's have an instinct to keep sitting on the nest until all the eggs have hatched so even if this is her only baby she might still have those instincts telling her to keep baby under her for a bit.

It hatched sometime during the night the other night. So I’d guess it’s about 30 hours old or so. My only concern is that this chick might need to eat/drink sooner than other chicks, because of that unabsorbed yolk sac?

This was the only egg under her, so she’s not on any others. She also didn’t leave the nest on her own to eat/drink, I had to physically get her off the nest to eat/drink once a day.

I wouldn't be too concerned with anything just yet. The more recent picture already shows it's smaller and drying up compared to the original photo.
I had a duck that I had to help hatch due to a shrink wrapping issue and he had the same thing. It eventually shrunk to a very small black tiny bump And wasn't ever an issue.
As far as the broody, I would just keep an eye on everything for now but don't freak out just yet. Like I said, it's pretty early still. I would think after a day or two with her having her chick her instincts will kick in to start showing the chick where to get food and water. 💕

Ok, thank you!! It does seem to be getting around ok. I think I’ll give it another day and then if she’s still not getting up and eating/drinking, I’ll move them both out of the coop by food and water, and then help them back in with the food and water. The hen didn’t get up to eat or drink even when food and water was within reach, unless I moved her out of the coop. Then she was like, “oh right, I’m starving!” So I think she’s just super dedicated and stubborn. Which I identify with as a mother 😂

Just wanted to update. The yolk sac is even smaller today. The chick is getting around well, and has no problem running full speed back to mom when I put it back down in the coop. 😄

I still haven’t seen mom take it out to eat, but I’m hoping it happens when I’m not around. I saw it poop yesterday and it looked normal, so I’m hopeful! 🙏🏼❤️
