So real quick question, one of the two older hens i got from a friend goes crazy walking around and making noises at me every time i come outside or anywhere near her. It is like a constant awk-awk-awk... real low and not overly loud just constant. finally after two weeks of talking quietly, moving slowly around them and spending as much time as i can with them she has started to feed out of my hand and even let me pet her today... It is just wish i knew what this noise was. She makes the same sound just very very loud and faster if anyone else comes near her. Not aggressive just does not seem to like other people.. Odd behavior and i have never had chickens let alone ones that someone else has raised. Thanks in advance for any help!

I've had a few hens in my years of keeping chickens that loved to follow me around talking up a storm. They meet me at the door and tell me everything they think is necessary. I have always found them to wonderful silly birds that I enjoy seeing daily. I miss my last one. She was a cantankerous welsummer hen with spurs and a propensity to goose step.

Some young pullets at the point of lay will often start talking to me too which tells me they are about to start laying. Most go back to ignoring me after their first egg.

Every chicken has a different personality. Some have that extra something that makes them fun birds to have.

Your girl could be talking to you, or even doing an alarm call. Chickens have a wide vocabulary and every sound they make has a meaning to them and other chickens.

I asked once before about their language and wishing someone who is more familiar could put together some kind of chicken language translator.
I guess you really have to use her body language to help interpret her sounds.

One of my hens has a similar aound. Her's is low and quite and held a little longer. The sound increases over about 2 seconds. This hen is one that will sit on my knee for petting so not aggressive or cautious around me at all.

Whenever I am in my yard my welsummer squawks at me incessantly..she wants out of her own or st the very least some attention and treats lol

The other day, someone posted a YouTube video of the egg song and barely-post-teenager banty roo 9-Volt joined in with **enthusiasm**! Afterwards, he sat on the back of the couch and crowed off and on for maybe 20 minutes. We giggled and giggled but hoped we weren't stressing him in some way. Wouldn't you love to be able to speak chicken!
