What is this in my chickens poop?! Sick pullet

4.5 month old pullet has been acting lethargic and sickly for a few weeks now. Yesterday and today she's worse and acting severely lethargic. Drinking water but barely eating. Green poop.

Then I saw this in her poop. What is that?!

Those 3 pieces are sort of rubbery. Like either pieces of a big worm or maybe pieces of intestines??? I saw a piece of this on her poop yesterday too.

I did a fecal float yesterday and didn't see anything. But my microscope is my kids compound microscope so isn't the best. I need a better microscope but those aren't cheap!

Since she has been so sick and I don't know why, I gave a round of amoxicillin. She just finished that round 2 days ago (the the next day - yesterday - total lethargy and panting all day long. Barely walking. Crouched over like a decrepit old woman when she did try to walk! Wings literally dragging on the ground. So antibiotics did nothing for her apparently.). I gave it for 8 days. No improvement in her sickly health.

Any ideas? Should I give her worm medicine just in case? If so, what kind and what's the dosage? I've never given worm meds to them before.

It is lash egg material. Do you have access to a vet? Just because amoxicillin did not work, doesn't mean another antibiotic won't. A vet can culture it. Can you give her some calcium?

She hasn't started laying yet. She got mysteriouly sick and has stopped growing at about 4 months old. Comb isn't even developed yet at all (still a flat head). No red on her face. Not even grown out.

I don't have money for a vet. I already took another mysteriously sick chicken to the vet a few weeks ago and all they did was an X-ray (expensive) and gave me some amoxicillin. None of which did anything for that chicken as she died about a week later. I have to figure this out at home.

I'm willing to try any home remedies for her. I've been giving nutridrench each day which seems to be doing nothing for her. I give it because she isn't eating much. I was thinking of going to get some Poultry Cell today because I read that has other vitamins it it that nutridrench doesn't have?

They are all on Nutrena Naturewise Starter Grower.

What other antibiotic should I try? I have some Tylosin (generic of Tylan) on hand?

Do you have photos of her?

It looks like is might be lash material (Salpingitis), but it could be cecal core, hard to tell.

Any improvement at all with Amoxicillin? Dose is 57mg per pound of weight given twice a day for 7-10 days.

If she were mine, I'd treat for Coccidiosis.
Liquid Corid dose is 2tsp or Powdered Corid Dose is 1 1/2tsp per gallon of water given for 5-7 days as the only source of drinking water.
Do not add any extra vitamins/electrolytes that contain B1(Thiamine) to food or water during the course of treatment.

See that she's eating her chick starter really well, you may be able to entice her with bits of egg. Keep her hydrated.

Any lice/mites on her?
Crop emptying overnight?

If she stopped growing, she may be failure to thrive.

Hi, Yellow321! I'd be leaning towards a worm problem. They should be wormed regularly. Put a marker on your calendar so you don't miss worming them each month. I'm not saying it isn't coccidiosis though. Have you given them any raw meats, fish or chicken? If so, don't do it any more! If it was off it might have caused salmonella. Probiotics, Prebiotics and yeast extract are supposed to be a good preventative. I, usually, dose my chickens with a weekly (or twice weekly) treat of cooked pasta or cooked rice with yoghurt mixed in as well as any additional capsules of probiotics, prebiotics not mentioned on the carton, and anything else that you think they may be lacking. They love it! Try to get yoghurt without the sugar as the bacteria feed on it. Don't forget chickens will attack any mice that come near them and eat them. You don't know what the mice may have. Worms, worm eggs, etc. You can't stop them from eating the mice unfortunately. I've seen mine attack and kill a mouse. Then, run around trying to outrun the others trying to steal her 'treat' until she finally swallows it. All you can do is try to make it as impossible as you can for the mice to get in but I let mine out to free range for a while each day soo ... Also, give them things like yoghurt, etc., to counter those problems. I really believe that helps. Good luck! Please let us know how things are going with her. Hope she gets better!

I thought the same so I gave a direct dose of corrid yesterday. No improvement yet so I'll give another dose today. Do you think I should try dewormer? I'm not sure if corrid plus dewormer at the same time would be too much for her already fragile system. How long until I see any improvement with the corid if it is in fact cocci? I'll stop it after a few days if it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I did t a fecal float test and didn't see any cocci eggs, or any parasitic eggs as a matter of fact, but again, I'm using my kids compound microscope so it's not the best!

No signs of lice or mites on any of my birds.

She's not eating really well. She will eat a few bites of her food if I put water in it. For a few days she would eat the crumbles with the rest of the flock. Then she tanked again and now is back to only eating wet crumbles. She has has boiled egg yolk alongside the wet crumbles for weeks now. She will peck at the egg yolk a bit but is more interested in the wet crumbles. She'll eat dry plain oatmeal oats more than anything. I give her a few out of my hand.

Crop is emptying overnight.

She's drinking on her own pretty well.

Zero improvement with the amoxicillin. I gave that dose you said and did it for 8 days. No improvement, as a matter of fact she's declining so I didn't go the 10 days. Stopped at 8.

If it is lash material, is there something I can do for her? Is there a different antibiotic I should try maybe? I have some Tylosin (generic of Tylan) on hand. Should I try that? Or should I order some Baytril maybe? Or is there some way to clear out the lash stuff if it's making her sick?

She's the darker chicken on the right in the second photo.

I believe she stopped growing because something has made her sick and losing weight. She's skin and bones. She was fine a little over a month ago!

Poor thing!

Giving a direct dose of Corid is a good idea. Give undiluted Liquid Corid at a rate of 0.10ml per pound of weight orally twice a day for 3 days. This is in Addition to her drinking the mixed Corid water. (If she's not drinking the mixed Corid water, syringe it into her several times a day to get the medication into her and to keep her hydrated).

You could deworm her. Safeguard Liquid Goat dewormer at a 0.23ml per pound of weight, given orally once daily for 5 days in a row.
OR
Valbazen at 0.08ml per pound of weight, given once, then repeated in 10 days.

A lot of people do treat Salpingitis infection with Amoxicillin. Sometimes it's effective, but a lot depends on what the cause is.
Baytril is much stronger, so you could try that if you feel she's failing and you want to pull out all the stops.
She's young, so you don't have to worry about withdrawal periods of eggs.

Speaking of Baytril. I know you said you didn't have money for the vet but try calling and explaining the situation and asking for a dose of Baytril without a vet visit. Sometimes vets will just give the dose without an exam and extra vet bill. My vet charged me about $4 for a needless syringe ful of Baytril for a chick with an infected nostril from a peck. Worth a shot!
