What is this thing?

So this poor chicken was a feed store special and since the day it came home we have been so confused about what it actually is. It's around 6 months old now but has never crowed, looks like a barred rock but the legs and skin are wrong and it is just all around ugly. We call it duckling but I am hoping to figure out what exactly it is. We're not even 100% sure it's a rooster. I think so because the comb grew so fast and the lonely little tail feather but who knows.

Not sure of the breed. Maybe a Dominique??? I would agree that it looks like a cockerel tho, based on its sickle feathers. Good luck!

I think you're right about him being a cuckoo maran. I've never heard of that breed before. I also ended up with a regular barred rocker rooster but he's recently turned mean and started going after my kids. I'm only going to keep one roo and this guy is much calmer and quieter (for now.) Thank you! Guess this ugly duckling will eventually turn into the proverbial swan after all haha

Cuckoo Marans cockerel, most likely. It's possible I'm completely nuts, but....I don't find him at all ugly!
