...and concerning your “spool” question... I’m fairly sure a belt went on it and this was driven by a separate engine... maybe steam???
That is an hold silo filler... you would lay corn stalk bundles on it and the conveyer would take them to the rollers that push them into the chopper/blower them up the pipe into the silo..
They had a pipe that went down the inside of the silo and someone. Usually the oldest man and kids walked in circles compressing the silage as it filled..
I was one of the kids inside... I liked being outside throwing the bundles on the carriage, but my parents thought I was too young for that.
