What is up with my Buff Orp Roo's feathering?

He has always had this pattern in his feathers but I never really noticed he was different from the girls until a friend who was going to buy him mentioned it to me. Sorry this is the only pic I have of him that shows the feathering due to a llama murdering my camera.

It looks like bad coloring and/or a few missing feathers.
Sorry about your camera.

He isn't missing feathers they are just ruffled from my 3yr old holding him.

He came from a breeder who keeps their bird separated by breed so he isn't a cross.

I would not use him for breeding pure for show. He might molt out of it, but it looks like a coloring defect that could be genetic. Unless it is some weird sun bleaching.

It looks slightly reminiscent of a picture I saw of a "lemon cuckoo marans". I know this bird is a buff orpington, but those don't look like the typical BO rooster feathering.

Well he isn't going to be used for breeding. Not for purity anyway. He is just a member of my backyard flock. He is also one of the lowest roos in my flock. My poor Welsummer is the youngest and lowest and man he gets beat up.
