what is vulture hocks on silkies

i plan on showing this year and wanted to know what these are. i have one roo thats is very nice but his comb i wouldnt say oversized but it is big.also what are all the standerd DQs for silkies

Vulture hocks are a DQ for any breed in the US but ones who ask for it, like Sultans.

Vulture hocks are stiff feathering at the hocks, appearing long and profuse on the legs unlike normal shank feathering which is softer. From a distance the bird appears to have another pair of wings.

Notice instead of feathers taking the general shape of the leg, the hocks have a definitely larger, longer set of feathers in which if handled, feel stiff.

Lack of black skin, only 4 toes, red comb, face or wattle. Feathers not truly silkied except in the wings, legs and main tail feathers...and vulture hocks.

Also, what ever you do, make sure you do not breed slipped wings in silkies, this is a huge genetic flaw. It will mess up all your lines if you have this. Basicly it is where the primary flight feathers hang below the secondaries when the wing is closed. Primary feathers may also overlap in reverse order.

Ok, well for showing silkies, I will be honest with you, you don't want what most people try and sell at swaps, I have seen the most horrible silkies being sold at swaps this past year. Even ones that they called silkies and I am thinking, and what the heck else did you cross into those silkies, one of the worst silkies had straight combs....

Now I tell you this but when showing the roosters, they want the heads to look like this as well on the roosters. They want you to have hennie cocks pretty much. However when breeding for this in your silkies, they begin to have trouble "geting their funk on". When this becomes a issue most of the big timers who do silkies for shows have to do artificial insemination. Before you ask can you really do that with a chicken, yes and I have taken a course on how to do so from a man who use to show silkies in the nationals. This is the kind of stuff I would go and research into.
