I've noticed that alot of people screaming they cant afford medical care are doing so with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other

There is a BIG difference of being really needy/ needing help to get back on your feet and being a system mooch. I dont begrudge the really needy (sometimes i actually think that we should help them out even more..)... But, i cant stand the looser system mooches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND..i agree with whomever said that if these people were SO needy..why do they have cell phones and ipods and cable t.v. and internet? I think that if you recieve any kind of financial aide that you shouldnt be allowed to have any of those things while your getting a state/govt check...
Sorry.. just my opinion.
We coddle these people and give them free EVERYTHING! Yet..i struggle weekly to make my ends meet. Why? because i'm not a looser mooch and i work for a living...
its like rewarding bad behavior in a child....give them what they want to shut them up and they never learn a thing..they'll just keep taking and taking from the system...it makes me SO sick!

NOP said: For me - one of the frustrations is that I have nowhere to turn or vent (except for you wonderful people here!!). Many of you also agree that FAMILY, LIFESTYLE, EDUCATION are all failing our children - how do we change this?

I have often wondered what would happen to this country if suddenly the welfare system went bankrupt. This would not only effect those receiving services but those providing services. Social Services agencies, Health Departments, medical facilities just to name a few would close their doors and the unemployment rates would sky rocket. You would have hundreds of thousands of social program workers out of job as well as families who in the past may have opted to not work but now forced to seek work or starve...

Our country is practically built on the welfare system (medicaid, Section 8 housing, Food Stamps, etc).

That being said....how do we re-vamp something this huge? Can it be done?

you made a great point.

honestly it will be huge and hard and long to truly change anything for the better.

we can only try. and while we try, we rant, vent and rage about society on a whole.

Exactly Dawn. And the abuse of the welfare system is a 'given' in the fact that it doesnt work. So, why not abuse it or mis-use it? It was set up to be taken advantage of. How we went from a 'chicken in every pot' to todays disaster is mind boggling.

My favorite example is the young family on services who do go out and get jobs making minimum wage. This almost immediately bumps them from qualifying for foodstamps and medicaid. So now they are working 40 hours each and putting thier young ones in daycare and are most likely making less and have less than they did on services. Who in thier right mind would want to do that when there are easier options....Thats of course assuming that they can even afford for mom to work because daycare is so high.

The system and the economy are what is broken, not necessarily the families who use it.

Except the ones who abuse it..
there IS something wrong with them..lack of morals..

I submit that you drive by your local welfare office and see what is parked out there. I brought this up at the political forum and I got called a racist.

I myself do not drive a new vehicle. I could probably do the notes but it would affect my pocket book for sure.
