What is wrong with my baby geese.

" The extension services say not to introduce baby geese to pasture/grass/forage materials until they are over a week old. "
Gee I wonder what Wild goslings eat that first week of life - Mother's Milk?

That is so very true...

The Southern States medicated chicken starter has amprollium in it as the ingredient to combat cocci infections . I use that for all my babies- chicks, turkeys, ducks and goslings when they are little. As they get older , I switch to grow and finish pellets which has no meds in it. They all do fine on this. It sounds like your goslings got pecked by the chicks and I would just seperate them. As they get older, they can go back together. The chicks may have been bored, or possibly crowded?? which can lead to cannibalism.

Hi Nancy, how are all the geese doing? : )

You might want to ask about Southern State's Waterfowl pellets, they are wonderful, and formulated to be a Complete, balanced ration for waterfowl. "Complete" in feed terms means it will provide for every need for the lifecycle of waterfowl (except for starter feed of course) It comes out of a mill in Richmond VA, and many stores outside the area don't carry it according to reports I have received after I have recommended it. I have been told by the local store owners that the other stores can get it by requesting that the warehouse that serves your store keep it in stock. I have promoted it so heavily that the local store orders it by the pallet load to meet the demand. If there isn't that kind of demand in your area you might have to order it in advance so it can be shipped to the warehouse and put on the truck that serves your store (usually weekly)
I
f you want some fun throw a handfull on the water, It floats. Ducks just go wild, I think the movement bobing on the water makes them think it is alive and they race to gobble it up before it can get away!

The geese are just fine!!! I still haven't taken a photo of that "dewlap" that is really a sebastopol with grey and white feathering. He is really pretty, even with all the mud hanging off his feathers. LOL. I need to take more photos!

Hope all is well there in the lovely metro area! Have lots of babies this year?

Are you talking about baby goslings too?
There's nothing wrong with giving themstarter or grower feeds.
Practically speaking alot of people don't have enough grass or none at all such as folks in the SW to feed grass as their sole diet.

I use both brewers yeast and kelp mixed in the starter. Dandelions are so good for them and they love them (and how good is that -getting rid of dandelions!)
I give them non fertilized grass, and any leafy green is good, my geese and goslings actually like kale and collards. I give rolled oats (old fashioned) to
them also in moderation, also sunflower and pumpkin seeds for the adult geese (ground and hulled for the goslings-just a little). Last Fall the geese cleaned up all the windfall apples and pears-saved me a lot of work!
