He's a 14 week old D'uccle. Yesterday, I noticed this redness around the area where his feathers come out of his feet. The redness is inside the feathers and on the actual skin where the feathers come out. He has this on both feet.

He eats medicated 18% grower/starter, and forages in the run. He hasn't been treated for worms. I can't see any mites on him and his poo looks normal. I had a post concerning his comb having some purple on it about a week ago, but I think it was because of the hot weather, but I thought I'd mention it.

Here are some pics of his feet:

It looks like some sort of follicle infection. Try some non-pain relieving neosporin on it if you can. Might be difficult with a feather foot. Could it have lice? Lice may cause discoloration of the comb. Check its vent. Normal? Good luck

Thanks!

I will try the neosporin. Since the mention of lice causing purple on the comb, I'm wondering whether the occasional purple on his comb that started a week ago (improved some after giving electrolytes) is related to the current condition of his feet.

How can we tell the difference between infection or lice/mites? Would lice or mites attack just on the feather follicles of his feet?

Also, I will check his vent first thing tomorrow. What will that tell us?

Should I give him antibiotics in the waterer? If so, what kind of antibiotics might be effective for this type of infection?

Thanks again!

Will Neosporin take care of it, or should I be giving him antibiotics in the water? If so, what kind? He has this on both feet.

I would try the neo first and see if that takes care of it. Try for at least a week before doing anything orally. If you need to take it that step further, you can purchase oral antibiotics at your local feedstore.

Thanks so much for the advice.

But now dust and dirt are sticking to the Neosporin on his feet. I don't know of any antibiotic topical that's not sticky. Is there one, or should I just keep using the neo?

Thanks!

Would it be good for her to soak his feet in epsom salts a couple times a day? Also, I think I would bandage his foot after putting the neosporin ointment on. I think I would isolate him too, until its under control. I'm sure he's stepping in some germ-laden stuff.
