Don't remind me. Two 4th of july's ago I got a pound ofbutter for like $1.47 or so. I just looked last week and it's over 4 dollars a pound wholesale now. It's just sick what's going on.

There is more to it than the government devaluing currency by printing money, although that (really)^6 doesn't help. In microeconomics, we learn a firm's #1 job is to maximize profit and reduce production costs. Consumers have a role in this because they determine what price point the market will bear. Most things you buy at the grocery store have multiple layers of middle men, which just adds to consumer cost at checkout.

It is possible to buy direct from producers in some parts of the country - a side of beef, milk by the quart or gallon, fresh baked bread. For example, if I wanted to buy half a butchered Charolais cow, I would look for producers near me (https://search.charolaisusa.com/default.aspx) Raising your own eggs/meat is a great way to tamp down inflation effects, and if you're on this website, you're well on your way. :) The ones who are most successful are vertically integrated, eg. they produce the grain for their critters and the critters and are less controlled by feed costs. Butchering your own further reduces costs.

Obviously, if you buy mostly pre-packaged food, it'll be tough reduce your costs. The packages are getting smaller and the prices are rising.

I try to avoid religion & politics as topics of discussion, but it isn't easy to avoid bashing politicians these days. When the hard working decent folk can't even fill the oil tank for heat, & a tank full of gas costs as much as a week's worth of groceries Used to cost & doesn't even get you through half the week of driving to job sites, something is Definitely Wrong. I guess they can't rob the social security funds anymore so they're going to gouge us & our very survival income. It's truly disgusting.
I honestly thank God for my chickens and their eggs because that is a ongoing bright spot in my life as well as my budget.

EEs are good for blue too, all of mine lay blue. But I will!
I have 4 EE that are laying; 3 lay brown or mottled and 1 lays green. I have another 4 that will start laying later this month that are supposed to be blue layers. I don't expect bright blue though, which would add variety to saleable product (son's egg business). My cinnamon queens lay brown.

Wow, I only have the blues 😂 they’re decently vibrant, starting to fade with age though

I just want to clarify this right now.
Do NOT EVEN think to point to a D as the blame, as every single R there has power to stop it, yet are happily letting it happen as well. BOTH PARTIES caused this. There is no D or R anymore, it's them .vs. us and if they can keep you fighting with your 'other letter' neighbor then you are not paying attention while they rob and rape you.

With that being said, I am seriously considering getting a building built here, call it a storage shed 'officially' (OK ok, it's storing chickens, MINOR detail :) ) and raising my meat birds too. I think a dozen at a time or so would work, maybe 20. get them to age, whack em, freezer them and start on your next batch, by the time you run through the others are ready. I can't / do NOT want a rooster but my friend has several. I can easily borrow 'Chucky' for a few days and turn him loose with my girls to get fertile eggs when needed to carry on my meaters on my own.
