I have run across a few posts with many great recipes for homemade Treat Cakes.

What is yours ?

I have never seen any of the ones online, but what I do is:
1. Chop up some bread slices into little chunks
2. drizlle some water over them, so they become somewhat soggy.
3.Mix cracked corn into this bread glop.
4. Add any additional stuff (leftovers, yogurt, oatmeal etc.)
5. Either give it to them just like that or mush it into balls/rolls for them!

Its pretty simple. Everything i use is either moldy or uneatable for humans, so its not like I have to go buy new bread for them (I just use moldy bread) The chickens love it!

Birdie Pancakes

When you finish making pancakes for yourself and/or family - you know how there's always a bit of leftover batter? I hate to throw it out. So I came up with this.....

Whatever amount of batter is there - double it with cornmeal and yogurt (or milk). That's your starter.

Now, take a banana, mash it up - add to batter.

Dig through collection of baking supplies - coconut, almonds, small pieces of pecans, sunflower seeds (hulled), flax seeds, rolled oats, wheat germ, whatever you've got on hand. Now check your spice rack for orange peel (either fresh or dried) or lemon peel or cinnamon or dill or parsley or or or.

Pour batter onto griddle to make pancake as usual - but sprinkle some of the items from your baking supplies (coconut, almonds, etc.) onto each pancake while still 'forming'. Cook as usual.

Some favorites: Banana-orange-coconut; pecan-lemon-blueberry (watch out though, makes purple poo!); sunflower-cinnamon-oats - the options are limitless!

Bewarned though, these tend to be really really thick, so cook for an adequate amount of time (or add more liquids to the batter to thin it further).

I make these for my chicks and for the birds at the Bird Rescue we volunteer for....ever seen a Blue and Gold macaw 'beg' before? What a riot!

Also, do a quick 'google' search for this topic and you'll find some great sites to explore! The options are nearly limitless!

"pet bird recipes" - came up with a whole bunch of great ones.

I bake for the birdies at the Bird Rescue we volunteer for. I've many easy, quick recipes to share.

Like birdie corn bread (use homemade cornbread recipe - boxed version has iron added) - add frozen veggies to cornbread batter - they'll eat it right up! Can make into muffins also if you've got a small flock and don't want a huge amount fresh. Stores well in fridge or freezer too.

Or birdie ice-cream cones - use lemon flavored muffins, but instead of muffin cups, pour batter into ice cream cones - bake as usual - these don't keep well and should be served within an hour or the cone gets all mushy and hard to handle (especially with hungry cockatoo's around!)

Or Avi-cakes - take birdseed and whatever cereals you have (cheerios, rice chex, etc.) mix with corn syrup and/or honey - bake in a real low oven for a long time (250 degrees for over an hour, maybe even 2!), they'll get hard like a brick, so score them prior to baking (or you'll have a sheet of 'em!). Break apart and serve. Stores wonderfully.

Or almond birdie bread (pricey for the almond filling, but after the holidays, you can get cans pretty cheaply)

Or oatmeal cookies (with raisins and sunflower seeds (hulled)

Or let your imagination go wild. Think what would they like to eat?! After all, they eat stinkbugs - hey, my baking skills aren't that bad, are they?!

What great ideas....Thanks All !!!!!!!

Chickens rock!mysocks :

cracked corn to chickens is kind of like ice cream to little kids. it is literally "cracked corn" you can find it at a local pet store or farm supply store.

Awesome, Thanks !!

When I have a chicken under the weather I make my Sick chick cookies.

I use
two eggs
two pieces of whole grain bread crumbled up
1/2 cup steel cut oats
2 cups whole wheat flour,
1/2 cup milled flaxseed
1 cup shredded carrots,
1 cup shredded apples,
1 cup organic kefir
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1/2 tsp vi-tal

I mix all that up and spread it on a cookie shhet and bake it on 250 for about 15 minutes. I cut it up and put some in the fridge for a couple days and feed the rest warm to the sick bird.

I also make a salad for them sometimes if I can get a good deal on produce at the store but I try to make them this once a month or so.

I use
1 large tub of baby spinach chopped well
2 quarts of strawberries
4 apples
milled flaxseed
Raw steelcut oats
1 cup of kefir

toss it all up serve it.

OF course I have a bunch of chickens so these recipes may need to be cut down for most.
