What killed my chicken?

This afternoon I found one of my hens dead. She appeared to be left at the site of the kill. There were feathers scatterd all around. Her head and one wing were gone, and all the feathers were gone from her neck. They were free ranging in a fenced back yard. Thanks.

Sounds like the work of a raccoon.

This happened during the day. Would a racoon kill during the day? I know there are racoons out here. There are some cats that run lose out here too. They aren't mine but they do cross my property.

Adult birds would likely be too large for a cat. Raccoons can hunt during the day.

ok. I'm still working on my chicken tractor. Is there anything specific I need to do to it to keep racoons out?
