my hens are in a netted fence and a couple will fly over it....and they have access to their coops as well. One of my hen went missing. One that flys over the fence. I found her 100 yards away in the side of the country road we live on. Her entire head was gone as was her breast meat. No feathers plucked off and she was just lying beside the road. I read that a great horned owl, high we do have, will grab a chicken by the head and take it to their nest and eat just the head and sometimes breast. The owl will then fly off with the carcass and just drop it somewhere so it doesn’t rot in their nest. Could this be what happened or does anyone have any other possible ideas with that kill pattern. The whole bird looked so clean, just missing it’s head and breast meat. And question number two. I have a domestic Tom who is 2 years old and lives with my chickens. He is rather tame and doesn’t wander. He free ranges but also flys over the fence to be with the girls. He has been gone for 2 days....no feathers anywhere and he is a big Tom. He has lived here for 2 years without ever leaving. Any ideas....thank you and yes my girls are on coop detail while we build a covered large tractor we can keep them in for safety.
