Hello everyone. So we recently ( we’ll a week ago Friday song I’m guessing they are almost 2 weeks old? ) got 10 baby chicks. They are suppose to be Isa Brown but I don’t think they all are. 4 of them have dark brown markings which I’m guessing is the Isa brown while 4 other ones have lighter markings. Then there are 2 yellow ones😂 which I know aren't the Isa browns. So any guesses on what they could be? This is our first time adding chickens so I’m not sure about the different types. From what I have researched I think maybe 4 are red sex links and I’m not sure about the yellow ones. Question number 2 how can I be sure they are all girls? Bonus question if you can tell me what type of duck these are and do we wait for all the feathers to come in before we can figure out if we have two boys, two girls, or one of each? Thanks everyone. I have learned so much already from this message board!

The ducks are pekins, or possibly White Layers.

You do have all ISA Brown chicks aside from the all yellow ones. ISA Browns are a type of red sex link hybrid. They are all females, as they are bred so that the males hatch out a different color.

Your yellow ones could be a few things. I would say that likely they are leghorns, or white rocks.

They are yellow. So y’all think they are all Isa browns? A friend of mine said they looked like hers when she had some and hers were golden comets are something like that. 4 of them look the same the other 4 look different but them 4 look the same then you have the 2 yellow. I don’t know if it makes a difference but they came from tractor supply. Then held 10 isas back for me and had then ready when I got there. When I got home and let them out they were all different. I called back up there the next day and they said they had sold out took all the signs down and couldn’t remember which ones they had in stock this time they they get different kinds each week.

Heres a male and female isa brown. Female darker, Male lighter. It can be a bit hard to tell at this age because so many breeds look the same as chicks.

Ok thank you. I guess time will tell. It honestly doesn’t make a difference we are going to keep all of them I was just wanting to do some research on them to make sure they have everything they could need/want. They are all very sweet and loving and run to us to be held and everything!

How are you liking your heat plate? Do you have it positioned so that the chicks can get close or so that the thermometer reads what it is “supposed to” on the floor? I have the same one and am nervous about using it because it seems to get so much hotter than the other brands.

We like it and have had no issues. This is our fist time so I can’t compare it to anything or any other brands. It bigger then what I thought it would be so the first couple of say I had to use it standing up. But we built a bigger area for them and have it down now and they can run in and out of it. Everyone is healthy and happy.
