what kind of bird is this?

oh they race them 300 + MILE as young Birds up to 500 miles as old birds.

I had many that return 500 mile in the same day.

I don't see a race band ,just the one band......so was lost during traning..or someone try to break it to their new loft(bad idea)

It was a grizzle homing/racing pigeon

I would of tried to catch it. Not all will make it back home (thats how alot of breeders cull their birds, the ones that dont make it back home, arent worth it)

Sour.......odd, if in a race you would think it would have a AU band.......CBS band birds are worth alot....may be able to check with some racing clubs they may have a idea who bird it is. what are the letters on the band.

Band numbers : JPM 1023 (not sure about the number) 2011 - youngbird. I'm in NJ, Deerman. Probably a NJ, Staten Island, or NYC bird. Bird was probably released in Pa. or Ohio.

this guy appeared to be healthy,although feathers can fool you sometimes.
i doubt i will see this bird again but i will keep the info in mind if it happens again.

interesting stuff,now i gotta go look into racing birds.lol
might have to get some.

Turns out that this guy distributes bands throughout the NY/NJ area. This band was sold in Brooklyn, and the owner is being contacted with my # by the band seller. Well done, Deerman!

36 hours and no contact from the bird's owner. Responses from previous owners that I have tracked down: Kill it, it's a cull. Feed it up and then turn it loose. Only one man came here from Staten Island to pick up his pigeon- an hour drive or so. Turns out that this bird and his nest mate sister had flown in 4 races prior to the one when they got lost. They each had 2 wins and 2 seconds. In the race where they got lost, over 60% of the birds flown never made it home. The owner offered me a generous reward which I refused and said that this cockbird was going into the breeding pen. He was hopeful that someone might be rehabbing the nestmate hen.

My gut tells me that many of these birds which return home late or after rehabbing are immeddiately culled.


Still not sure what I will do with this hen once she is back in shape. I'll probably release her full well knowing what her fate will probably be.
