I'm bringing home some chicks hatched in my classroom in a couple of days. I was just curious as to what some are. It was a busy day in our classroom so I don't have many pics. Sorry. Any input is appreciated if it is possible to even tell. This one is only a day old.

I’m no expert but, it looks a lot like my black copper Marans did as chicks. I don’t have a good picture of them at this age or I would post it. Someone on here, that knows a lot more than I do, will be able to help I’m sure!

You are welcome! Did your students love the process?
They have been over the moon throughout the whole process! They did not want to go home because they wanted to stay with the chicks. It has been pretty hard to teach with the sweet peeps in the background now and the kids wanting to find a reason to go near the brooder box to see them.

I am an instructional coach in a 1st-3rd grade building and am considering talking to teachers about a hatch next year! First grade has a learning target about changes in living things and I think this would be a perfect culminating activity! Have you hatched eggs before? Was it challenging?

This is the first time I've done it as I moved from teaching 1st for years to teaching 2nd this year. My school has done it for years and my own daughter was able to when she was in 2nd grade. It was not challenging at all in my opinion. I could see it being maybe a slight challenge for firsties just due to maturity but totally doable. We invite the 1st grade to come check it out and they happened to be in one of our classes when a chick hatched and it was for sure a moment for them that they will never forget.

Good to know that it wasn’t so hard! I am going to suggest it next year and see what happens! Enjoy the rest of the year! Summer is right around the corner!

Depends on the hatching eggs you got. If it hatched from a very dark brown egg, very high chances are that it's a black copper maran. Did you buy a "barnyard mix"? That could mean a mixed breed. I think it looks like a black copper maran, but could be an easter egger for all we know. I guess wait and see!
