Hi All, a few months ago my husband and I were given 5 chickens. The previous owner didn't know if there were any roosters in the bunch. We just got our first egg today and I know nothing about whether there ok to eat right away or if its fertile? Someone educate me PLEASSSEE!!!!

Here are some pictures of my Chickens! Also does anyone know what kind they are? Thank you!!!

To me they look like White Leghorns, all pullets (girls) as far as I see.

Congrats on your first egg- you can eat it! You can eat eggs that have been fertilized by a rooster too. They don't need a roo to lay eggs. They have to set on the eggs in order to start the process of chick formation:

They are good to eat, fertile or not. There is no difference in a fertile egg or non fertile egg as far as eating goes. Kind of surprising perhaps, but lots of folks here have hatched eggs from Trader Joes and other markets that specialize in healthy, or organic eggs. For sure, no egg from a huge egg factory setup is going to be fertile, but farm fresh eggs are fertile on many, many occasions and no one pays any attention to it. Of course, most don't know or don't think about it. LOL

If you have a rooster, you'd certainly be hearing crowing by now.

As I said above. The ladies are a layin' and young princes would be a crowin' by now. Not to mention the mounting they'd be doing. It's pretty hard to miss this activity. LOL

Well, for full grown birds, you can usually tell by the comb or the tail. I agree, none of your birds look like they would be roosters because they don't have a rooster tail. Roosters crow and have pointy hackle and saddle feathers and the classic rooster tail.
