This is one of the famous McMurray Mystery Chicks. You know... the one you get with your Broilers when you check that box that says "send me a free fancy/rare breed chicken with my order". As soon as I hit the submit button I smacked myself in the forehead - Doh! You know it's gonna be a rooster, dummy! Oh well.

{Edit} He's a BIG BOY! He was extremely friendly as a baby and followed me all around pecking at my shoes... he even liked to be picked up. He used to coo - not cheep - and his first crows sounded like a warbling siren, not the usual choked out "craaayyk". Now he's still friendly but extremely bossy with all the barnyard animals - except the geese and my 15 lbs Muscovy drake (LOL! he's clearly not stupid...)

What is he? I'm stumped... looks like he might be a Welsummer but I thought they were partridge as chicks, he was all black:

I dunno....why do I click on these?, I'm such a novice! LOL

Had to tell you that you take beautiful pictures.

Doesn't look like any breed I know, but he does remind me of the Black Australorps one hatchery here tried to sell. The roosters all feathered out looking like yours, pretty but not a BA.

I have no idea but he is a handsome big boy, but that being said I will start the guessing off with a mutt rooster.

I love that middle grown up picture.

you wouldn't think that McMurray would have mutts... maybe that's why they're giving them away.

LOL! That middle picture is his bossy look

I tried looking online a few places and even busted out my chicken field guide with no luck. He must be a mix of some sort? I've never seen anything like him before.

Dang! I've stumped the BYC forum? Inconceivable!

I reckon McMurray had a roo loose in the wrong henyard! Can't complain when the little bugger is free, eh?

I have a 'no rooster' policy but he's so pretty and he's very nice to people so I figured I'd keep him til one of my neighbors mentioned the crowing

I wanted to get a couple of hens from whatever breed he is so I could have some more pretty birds. He's been out there getting friendly with the other girls so I put some of my Buff Orphington eggs in the incubator. Wonder what the result would be? I'll let ya'll know in about a month!

Hey guys... waddaya think about Blue Copper Marans? Wouldn't that be absolutely AWESOME? Yes. Yes, it would.

Saw this pic on the board while searching for all black chicks and thought that my boy isn't that terribly far off:
