What kind of rooster may be good around children?

No experience with roosters, just wanted to say that we went back and forth on the rooster issue and finally decided not to get one until our youngest is at least 6/7. I heard too many horror stories from other people about young kids and roosters. I don't want to have to constantly supervise chicken/kid interactions so it wasn't worth it to me.

brahmans, seramas, buff orpingtons, to name a few. Seramas are good, i have some serama roosters, real sweet temperments, there small and so cute! show them in 4h. judges love em!

I have pretty good luck with the Rhode Island Reds.

So I agree with what everyone else has stated about not leaving a child alone with a rooster its like not leaving them alone with a dog...I own a pitbull and she would be the least likely to hurt anyone of my 3 but thats another subject still wouldn't leave them alone with her.

I have an 18 month old and a 3 year old both raised with my chickens and roos.

My best roos for a large frame bird was my Light brahma...he was half the size of my 3 year old and was sooo sweet heard same from a lot of other brahma owners.

2nd was some small bantams which were D'uccles...my son use to put them in the back of his little push car and drive them around the yard.

WORST ROO:
My silkie liked to attack feet he has gotten better but oh lord he was bad....

So size isn't a factor i've heard alot about some HUGE roos being super sweet some breeds are known to be more agressive...

If you want a full size I loved my brahma and would have another one in a heartbeat

Bantam: D'uccles so pretty so cute and mellow same with the hens

True no child should ever be left unattended with a roo an oops waiting to happen..but I don't think there is a certain breed great with kids..I've had gentle breeds as also some of the agressive ones and I've noticed it depends on the roos personality..I have had buckeyes, cochin, silkies and even a serama go evil on me lol..and some giants, rir and game fowl that are the gentlest birds..every bird is an indivudual like peopl just to keep and eye out for a gentle roo..but still keep an eye on him as playful activity can also be dangerous..size is right the taller the more the danger like some saipans I have getting at 35 inch..serama would be best I guess so they can learn to handle a roo..they can be fiesty too but its tiny

My blue laced red wyandottes are the sweetest chickens ever. I have raised 4 roosters and every one was delightfully mellow. They are big and fluffy and super gentle. A bit cowardly when it comes to confrontation, but very watchful. Plus they are gorgeous! Mine were even hatchery stock and still had great temperments.

I think it just depends on the rooster. My buff orpington can be a terror when he wants to be.
I adore roos but would not have one anywhere near a small child. Even the sweetest rooster gets cranky when their hormones are up.
In fact I wouldn't let little ones around chickens at all. I am legally blind in one eye because a chicken pecked me when I was little. It didn't do it out of aggression, it saw my eye move and did what came naturally. It happened so fast, a dozen supervising adults couldn't have stopped it.

I've never heard of a Serama being a little (Insert here) to a child. I have one and love him. Never had a mean bantam wyandotte rooster.
My choice would be a Serama!

I am not sure this is even worth two cents....but here I am.

I think they all turn when the spirit hits them. Roosters...they have a job to do. If you are perceived to be a threat they will protect their girls.....because that is their job.

So far all my RIR roos were dispatched.....to freezer camp and beyond.
My Barred Rock....he was the Lone Rooster that the BO beat up and I made him his own coop and run and found him some girls. Gosh, there has never been a better roo to his girls. He has five, two hens and three pullets. But he hates my guts. I made him the coop and run, I saved him from the BO and I found him his girls. I can no longer go in the coop and run.....unless I am dressed in my bib overalls and coat with the hood. It snowed and I went out there dressed like that and he ignored me....go figure. My husband usually goes in for the eggs and to feed and water.
My Buff Orpinton came at me once.....I was a perceived threat and understood it immediately and simply pushed him away with my boot. One of the hens escaped from the corner run and I was trying to catch her and put her back....BO thought I was hurting her when she made racket when I picked her up. BUT....my DH had a big run in with him a couple of times. It was getting ugly....all I could think of was the BO needed to back down because DH would dispatch him if he did not. He has not come at him again so maybe it was a glitch.
My cochin roo, Sweet Harry, has done nothing that could be considered agressive....to date.

But I think it is simply the rooster's personality and what they perceive to be a threat. We all want them to look after their girls but how do we know what goes through their minds.

Be careful always. Don't turn your back and let your guard down. And don't let the little ones be around them without being right next to them.......
