What kind of sand for dirt baths

Hi I've just discovered my chicks having a dirt bath is this a sign they may have mites or is it normal. also should i keep this area full of nice dirt/sand as there is not much there at present

Hmmm, I read these posts and am wondering if I should put sand in my run. It's mostly dirt now. These are my first chickens and I am just about ready to put them outside in the coop, but now they are just enjoying the daytime outside.

Also, I tried to put bins of sand in the run for the chickens to take sand baths in, but the chickens didn't seem to want to go in them. The bins are 2-3 inches high, about 8 inches wide, and about a foot long, and I'm wondering whether the issue is the sand or the bins.

our's just love plain old dirt, seem's to make them happy to roll around and fluff and dig in it

Sand isn't really my girls cup of tea. They prefer dirt. And peat moss is the best of all!!!
