Hi! I’ve seen some info on using sulfur with chickens to help pest control. I don’t have any issues now, just looking at preventative measures.

I found this kind at Agri Supply. It says 90% elemental sulfur. I don’t know what the other 10% is. Can anyone tell me if this kind is okay to use with chickens?

I think you’re right. It’s important to know what’s in it. I think I’ll return it to the store and find something I feel more sure about. Thanks!

I’m allergic to sulfur. I can’t take sulfur antibiotics, I get rashes from stuff with sulfur in it, I work in a pharmacy and can’t even count the pills without having a problem.
I’m leery about using sulfur powder as I don’t want any dust on me. I found a product on Amazon (Elemental Soil Acidifier Sulfur Pellets).
Anyone have experience using pellets instead of powder?

I would avoid it entirely and treat for pests through other means if they pop up, as the way the sulfur is supposed to work is the chickens rub it all over their bodies. So you would not be able to handle the chickens, their eggs, etc.

There is still some dust with the pellets, but much easier to use. I’ve only used pellets in my garden. If you are allergic, but need to reduce pH in garden then using pellets (with gloves and face mask/respirator) would be better than using powder. But, I’d look into other means of reducing pH first.

If you intend to use sulfur for chickens, then I’d recommend against it bc of your allergy. A key way to limit parasites is to exclude wild birds. They bring in the parasites! But, if that isn’t an option, then there are other compounds that work depending on the parasite.

I didn’t even think about handling the chickens. I pick them up and kiss them all the time. That would get expensive with the cost of EpiPens!

I use this in dust bath:

The ingredients are 90% Sulfur and 10% "other", but there are instructions on the back of the bag for using on chickens and other livestock, so I imagine it is safe. I have been adding a small amount to dust bath for several months with no ill effects.
