What kind?

Well... I've heard Rhode Islands are really good egg layers although I've never had any so I couldn't verify it.

According to my reading...
Rhodes Island Reds, Leghorns and Hybrids (Isas, Red Sexlink/Star, Black Sexlink/Star, Amberlinks, Tetra Tints, Austra Whites, California Whites, Production Reds, ect) produce the most eggs. They were bred for high egg production. Of course, a Black Australorp holds the record of 364 eggs in 365 days.

I personally went with a mix and plan on cross breeding to see what I get. My list of breeds is in my signature. I also have 5 Delawares and 20 Wyandottes on order and due to arrive in June.
Good luck on your search, because if you become a true addict, you won't be buying just for eggs.

I believe a black australorpe has the record for most eggs laid in a year, something like 364?. Leghorns are good egg layers. If you want hens for sure then you can buy a sex-linked breed. Then you know you have a hen and they are all decent egg layers.

our barred rocks have been unbelievably productive!
we often get 6 eggs from 9 birds, sometimes more! (mind you, these old girls are 2 years old)
of course, production drops after the first year and declines more after that.
the first year, they were all egg-a-day.
