Every guy has his "type" lol My older Roo, Sparky, loves the black/mostly black hens. He sits on the very top roost with my 4 Black Ausrtalorps and my mostly black Barred Rock mix. and when ever he gets out the coop he always has one of the Australorps with him. So my guestion is: Does your Roo have a preferance in his hens?

Part of my Flock

My roosters aren't fussy at all any hen that will stay still long enough for them :lau On the other hand i have a bantam cochin hen that spends all day with a muscovey drake they even sleep together at night. I think she thinks she is a muscovey

I've only had one rooster who seemed to NOT like a certain type of hen.

My Delaware hates the Barred Rock hens, but ONLY the hatchery types. He'll stomp his foot and chase them away, all of them, especially Fern. However, he makes an exception for my beautiful, showy heritage type BR hens, the ones with the precise barring and huge bodies. They need saddles to protect their semi-bare backs. He seems to prefer the Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers. In fact, seems that all the Barred Rock roosters I've had, as well as Isaac, have loved the bearded ladies, LOL.

Do you use hen savers? I really need them I think.. My cochins are horrible.. He REALLY likes them. Oh and a side note.. My houdan likes every girl, but my hens do have rooster preferences. My cochins do love my barred rock roo.. This is what happens when Gigi tries to mate one of the cochins.

If Hen Savers are a certain "brand", no. I make my own saddles and some are made by Hillbilly Hen. I make some for my big Orps with flank flaps because no saddles cover that area for them that I've ever seen. Some are even made with faux leather on one or both sides.

Here are ones I've made, a small one with ironing board fabric and one with faux leather--those are the flank flaps I designed when I had:

I don't believe they are a brand. Just another term for saddle.

Do they really work? How long does it take to help the feathers grow back?

I could make them easily enough. My RSL Penny has been needing one for weeks!

The feathers grow back in a few weeks, if they aren't in a molt and it's just rooster damage. They grow back under the saddle just fine, but you need to remove the saddle periodically for the bird to be able to reach her oil gland as well as dustbathe properly, which I do, but yes, they do work very well.

Great! Thanks :)

Hmmm, My roosters do seem to have 'types' My Polish rooster only chases his Polish ladies, and since we only have two Polish hens, they get a lot of attention. My younger Polish cockerel has 'delusions of standard' and is so convinced that his girls are the Barred Rocks. The Barred Rocks peck him every time he does his wing dance...

My Brahma rooster takes good care of everyone, but his favorite hens were my 4 Brahma hens, though sadly I rehomed two of them.
I also rehomed my Barred Rock rooster, who was convinced he was a bantam, when he most definatly was not, so he always chased the Brahma hens, and he tore up their feathers! So now he is flock lord at a woman who has 6 Barred Rock ladies all for him!
