I am getting several breeds of chickens to breed and I am wondering what kind would be good to sit on the eggs. And then how would I know what kind of chicken it was if I mixed them up? Same question if I decide to get an incubator.

I have bantam cochins. One hen is hatching out her 3rd clutch of the year... she started in Jan. ...may squeeze one more out of her before Winter!!

They aren't great layers. Mine lay a dozen or so eggs then brood.

I have also heard game hens make good broodies. And Kraienkoppes are supposedly very broody.

I have been told by a number of "old timers" that nothing beats the Silver Phoenix hens... I have 4 "on order" to add to my flock as soon as the state vet gets back so we can NPIP them.

What about the Australorpe?... And if I have a Silkie, can she lay on standard size eggs or does it matter?
