We started DLM with 2 bales of hemp over the dirt ground. We turn it and fill any problematic holes every now and then. When we clean out the coop, we scrape that litter into the run.

It seems as if any organic matter would work! I've used leaves, grass clippings, hay, and started using saw "dust" from a chainsaw. If you can get wood chips from a chipping project from a local tree company doing work near power lines could work too! I'd say turn it in if you have to. I never have to myself. I just throw a few handfuls of scratch grain into the run and let the birds go nuts turning it themselves searching for the morsels.I've got a mix of topsoil/whatever the cheapest dirt at home depot is, mulchy ground cover from the woodsy area in our yard, leaves, shavings, straw, and sand. I never need to clean it at all.
