The business of moulting in chickens is brought up so regularly and when questions are addressed the answers seem to miss some really cool points that are just becoming apparent to me as I have been following a few birds for the purpose of collecting their feathers for measurments. This will require a series of posts to be supplemented with photographs. Observations are on about a dozen each of roosters and hens all of which where hatched prior to June 1 of 2011.

Over the last few days I have noticed several roosters have dropped a wing feather on each side. Wing feathersare the inner most primaries and their replacements are underway.
