What NOT to feed quail

I've heard that avocado can be toxic to quail. Don't feed them anything you wouldn't feed to a dog. Chocolate, onions, avocado, generally any leaf from most house plants.

They do LOVE wax worms and meal worms though. Mine goes nuts for them, I throw them on the kitchen floor and she runs around slurping them up!

In her book "Coturnix Revolution", Stellar has an entire chapter of plants that are toxic to quail.

You should feed any veggies/fruits extras in a dish of some sort or clean them out of the cage often. Coturnix can be picky and often don't consume all they are given (as well as distributing food matter all about the cage). Greens and fruits mold/spoil quickly (esp. when it's warm) and it's best not allow them access to the spoiled browse.

I have just started feeding them surplus squash, they love it and devour it like a pack of pirahnas. the seeds are extremely good for them and a covey of only 6 or so coturnix can dispose of them in a matter of hours

I've given them any greens from the garden (arugula, kale, leaf lettuce, ruby chard) and tried peach and grapes so far. I try to think of the nutritional value. Great way to dispose of left over fruits that my toddlers throw on the floor!
