ok here it is, it's a chick that was born 4/3/10 so it's almost 3 weeks. it's back is like bare except for a little fuzz, it has been all weird like this since it was born. on it's head theres a spot that has real short fuzz but the rest is longer fuzz???
it's mama is a buff brahma bantum and daddy could be Easter egger, buff brahma or splash silkie. it is and was always the smallest chick, also when it was completaly zipped it sat in the shell for quite some time , it was breathing wierd so then I carefully pulled the two halves apart a little bit and then it pushed the shell the rest of the way open. just givin all the info that i can think of.

cute is not the word for this ugly duckling (chicken). ok, it soooooo ugly it's cute! Any ideas as to what is going on with it's feathering gene? I think, when God was handing out the feathering gene it was hideing in the corner somewhere.

My own personal rule of thumb is to never help them hatch at all. I feel if they can't hatch on their own then they can't survive. Your chic appears to have some sort of birth defects. It may grow to be a productive hen but I certainly would not use her for breeding.

there will be some that feather slower than others, and i think you have a late bloomer on your hands a cute one

It may just be slow to feather and will be fine. I had a frizzle roo that I called Baldy b/c he took forever to get his feathers in. He grew up to be the most beautiful roo though! I used him for breeding and none of his chicks ever had any problems. Here's a before and after of him.

I have three Birchen Cochin Bantams and they are 6/7 weeks old, and they look the same way right now except they have some hackles, but their backs are bare and just a few pin feathers coming in, they look icky. I know it is just a stage. Heck, my Silkies look like they have dandelion seeds popping out of their heads!
