:( What on Earth...*UPDATE*

Hey there! Dh & I used to live in Elizabethton when we first got married...ummm, almost 27 years ago. It sure has grown!!! We rented an apartment above a garage where we had to go outside to change our minds, that's how small it was. The house and garage was razed to put a drugstore there.

Most of our employees live in Carter county.

I'm so sorry you lost a chick. Also, I agree, don't leave any scraps out for a bit i think either... whatever it it, will come back if it thinks there's an easy meal... no matter what the size of the predator.
also, for the record.... i'm pretty sure wherever you are located....there are bears... they are everywhere even if you never see them.
I hope you are able to keep your chicks safe and surely hope you don't have any more issues!!!!

Can you put the tractors up next to the side of the shed or house..... keep an outside light on etc....?

Bears don't maneuver. It is more like walking in and taking what they want with little concern you can do anything about it anyway. And Honestly I don't suggest you try. You can shoot them and only make them mad enough to kill you. I would get hold of some professionals or the department of wildlife or something. I know they will trap them and relocate them here for coming near residences.

Hencackle,

I used to live in Elizabethton as well, on West G street, went to school there and everything!

Penturner,

Wow. I guess I will look in to who I can contact about it... Really don't want to kill something unless I have to, and kind of worried about getting hurt in the process with something that big, so not an option. I will definitely keep the scraps away, and perhaps only give them in the early morning when i am there for a bit, and traffic is heavier on the rd...perhaps that would deter? I have given scraps for as long as they have been out, never had a problem till this.

BTW, they are practically against the house now. Hard to picture, but they are barely 5 feet from the kitchen windows, light pours out of them on the chickens (bay windows, floor to ceiling so alot of light), and our bedroom is kind of ,behind the house, not even 100 ft from them, with 2 windows there facing them, though no light from our bedroom windows except the TV which I cant sleep without.

Guess I am going to try to find someone to contact...hope those rules still apply in the county, because we are outside city limits...

Well, last night I got ALOT done on the coop, was out there in the dark with a flashlight in my mouth and a drill and hammer in my hands, lol. Combined all the outside chickies into the tractor that wasn't touched, and didn't see any evidence of a repeat visit from Hagrid's kidnapper.

I went to tractor supply to get a couple supplies, such as those hammerable stable thingies, and of course left with a pound of those and 6 chicks. Go figure.

Thanks. I have no clue what they are...put them in the what breed section...feel free to take a look! I have 2 that are definitely black australorp, and then 4 that i have no clue about, with 2 definite mysteries.
