What people know.......

Imp, I think all the Alaskan Bball coaches are history teachers. In Haines, the science teacher tried to fail you if you played sports. He didn't think anyone should miss his classes for any reason. He later became borough mayor, I kinda wonder what he did when people didn't come to meetings?

My kids go to public school. I don't think they talk much about current events in 4th and 7th grade, fourth grade does Texas history. However, we always have the news radio on in the car, the older one at least reads the headlines, and both ask reasonable questions. They knew about the gulf oil spill, they know we are at war, they older one has been asking questions about the situation in Egypt, but school has almost nothing to do with it. Considering the ideological textbook wars here in Texas, it is amazing that they are allowed to learn history at all. In fact, Thomas Jefferson was too liberal for Texas School Board, and he was replaced with John Calvin, Thomas Aquinas and William Blackstone as leaders in revolutionary thought.

When I was in HS, all the coaches were history teachers. We had 1 semester on the Revolutionary War. The coach had us read a book that was historical fiction. It was a great book and I Aced the class. That was all he had us do.

I heard Tx changed the name of slavery too. Can't remember the new word for it now. A hundred years from now kids won't even know that our country used to buy humans and force them to work in fields and it wasn't until 100 years after they were freed that we were forced by our government to treat them as equals.

Hey, all you need to know is Sam Houston, Davey Crockett, Jim Bowie and the Alamo....What else is there, except Pecos Bill?

ETA: Judge Roy Bean and Walker, Texas Ranger.

i am about 21 and i love history. talking with people my age i am shocked how little they know. i have been told by peers that we should not learn history because its all in the past. growing up i would always watch the news, there was not sugar coating anything, i learned the truth about the world we live in. i watched shows like M*A*S*H, watched just about every war movie made. on 9/11 i was in 6th grade and all we did for over a week was watch the news, i watched it all happen live and yes it was not always easy to see but it was important. they did not teach us about vietnam or korea so those of us who wanted to learn about it had to do it on our own. when i talk to my friends about the stuff going on they have no idea what is going on. i am sad how uneducated some of my peers are

or when i ask my friends if they voted they ask my why they would do that. it drives me nuts

I'm sure this will stir the pot, but the main reason is that the teaching profession is inhabited by liberals who gave a virtual high five, in their minds, when they saw America taken down a notch or two.

so someone who opposes your political view are happy that thousands died in the attack? Do you hear yourself? That is an extremist unreasonable view that is part of what is causing so many problems in our country today " Oh the other side is sooo bad and our side is perfect in every way!"
Shame on you.

Ma'am, if you think that there isn't an insidious undercurrent, in our society and our government, which desires the destruction of free thought, expression and movement, you haven't been paying attention, or you have willfully put on a set of blinders.
We are moving, at exponential speed, toward a police state....Take a look at our most recent national event. A football game....Homeland Security announced, a week before the game that everyone would be patted down, before entering the stadium. One woman, now, has that power. If you don't like it, you just lost your $1,000 ticket.
Sadly, those would have this implemented, somehow, think that they will be immune from such actions.

Isn't it ironic that on one side of the globe, there is a people desiring the freedom of thought and movement, from a tyrannical government and on the other side, a government, desiring to restrict the freedom of its people.

I grew up on around Native people, on the powwow trail, (as the saying goes "sure you can trust the government just ask an Indian") I was raised not to trust the government, but I do believe it is foolish to blame all the ills on one political group, conservative or liberal, a majority of government officials, if not all are corrupt, to blame all the ills on one group and refuse to see bad in your own, is a form of extremism, and that encourages violence. By scape goating one group, it distracts people from the real issues.

Alright I've said my peace on the topic.
Any how, back to the OP's post, I was a teenager when9/11 happened and my niece and nephew both 12 and 14 know about 9/11, the current war and Vietnam, its surprising for me that some kids don't know what its about. That is scary!.
My best friend, a teacher, says that since no child left behind was implemented, they spend so much time preparing for testing, that they have little time to focus on things like hand writing, current issues, and anything that isn't on the current tests.
Even if I decide not to home school my kids, they'll be getting extra education at home.

one thing i wish they would do in schools is to have veterans come and talk about their experiences and what they went through. my old boss was a pow in vietnam and we would spend hours talking about it. it mad me realize how much the troops went through and how little respect we gave the ones who served in vietnam. i am scared of what will happen when my generation starts to take a bigger part in life because from what i have seen we are screwed

Go to your local feed store and purchase $10.00 worth of chicks and $50 worth of food and supplies. Don’t forget the water dispensers. Buying the metal ones, never plastic is always advised

Wow, this has turned into quite the illuminating discussion.

The car sits by the side of the road with both sides fighting over whose fault it is that it is broken and how to fix it so no one is home warm and safe and the care remains unfixed.

The problem with unilateral thinking is that it misses what the fence sitters see - that the grass is pretty much the same color on either side of the fence. There are no right or wrong answers to what ails us. There are only better methods. But, we will never find them when we keep blaming the insidious creep Royd speaks of one one party or the other. It tok BOTH parties 30 years to get us here so don't kid yourself that either one of them is going to fix it.

Q, I hope you don't find this patronizing, but you give me hope. I certainly, by far do not agree with some of your ideas or the conclusions you sometimes draw, but I love the way you work toward reaching them. I respect that.

As long as we keep at each other's throats we will never fix things. An ignorant people are easier to control.

BTW - the percentage of liberal ideologies among teachers changes with the level. College professors do lean toward liberal, but the number as of the last one I found is close to like 45 to 55. You can predict leanings based on area of study though, and since colleges have both business and arts you get a close to 50/50 split. The lower level grades tend to skew conservative especially in religious views. My kids are in public school, heavily supplemented at home and what they learn in school is very conservative.
