Hens go broody when you don’t want them to… and won’t go broody when you do. 
I left the coop door open overnight. Something went in and killed two ducks. One was not eaten at all. The other one's crop was eaten from the back, not the front. Then both ducks were covered by wood-shaving bedding, scraped over them in a mound, from 360 degrees around. I'm thinking bobcat?
