Quote: Not actually that bad.
The young foxes last year were opportunistic. We got hit at night 2 weeks after we got the first 14 chickens. They went under the barn door. We thought it was raccoons and thought the chickens were secure in the barn. We were wrong. Lesson learned.
The hit this year was the young foxes again. We haven't been able to eradicate the mother. Yet. We will.
The coons broke the door on the shop. They "shouldn't have been able to get in. Won't happen again...we're replacing with steel doors.
We do free range the chickens and understand the risks. We have a ton of wildlife...our land is prime hunting ground. Hunters have come from several hours away for years to hunt here. With that in mind, we haven't been hit that badly at all. Still sucks though because they got our pet chickies this year.
But any animal that's touched the chickens is no longer here, the entire family is no longer here with the exception of mrs fox. I actively trap year round.
Electric netting goes up next year for security when we're away. Too late to set it up now. Right now we're still free ranging.
