I believe you have an aerial attack. Hawk....Hoot Owl....Eagle..any prey bird. We have a great dog who can tell instantly when even a dove does not belong with his flock....So very sorry for your loss....it makes one sick of heart.

My chickens were free ranging one day and my Rooster started making a noise I had never heard before. I ran outside and there was a Red tailed Hawk, still in the yard, trying to fly with a 10 week old chick. The chick was too big for the hawk ( it was an adult ) to carry away and ended up dropping it. I didn't think the chick would make it, but she did ( and has the name Hawkie now ) She's an OEG mix so she's smallish. Don't know how big yours are, but thought I would share.
