HI I LIVE ON CAPE COD MA AND WANT TO GET CHICKS...WHAT PREDITORS SHOULD I BE SCARED OF, I LIVE ON .30 OF AN ACRE WITH A FENCED IN BACK YARD?? FENCE IS 6 FT TALL AND GOING TO HOUSE THEM IN A BIG STURDY SHED IN THE BACK??

I live here and the only thing I have had a problem with are the hawks circling daily looking down at my chickens. They have been attacked already and now the hawks know where to come look everyday. Also a fisher cat here but haven't run into any problems just yet.

if I were you I'd be most worried about El Chupacabra but then, that's just me

From what I've read, the usual suspects are always predator problems. If you can raccoon proof your night time bird enclosure, you have accomplished a great deed indeed

Some of the creatures that come to mind out on "the Spit" will be dogs cats, raccoons, weasels, hawks, owls, perhaps foxes and a few others. Did I mention dogs?
These are all in the small predator class.

Your best bet is to learn the Rule of Fences, the Law of Electric Wire and the Dogma of Trap and Snare.
For the winged predators, you'll have to submit to Agents of Federal Law, since it is a violation of that law to molest birds of prey. So ask ahead of time with your animal control and fish and game people about them.
Some people will recommend you "shoot, shovel and shut up" when it comes to BOP's, but you didn't hear that from me.

I'd also recommend you change your thinking from "being scared" to "The Best Defense is a Good Offense."
It seems a subtlety, I admit, but how you program your mind makes a difference in what you do.

You can only combat that which you face, after all.
Know your enemy and have a plan. Your chickens will thank you for it.

dogs, always dogs. even if none of the other preds existed, this one alone (because of irresponsible humans) will force you to have a fortress in order to keep birds safe
