Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Generally game roosters are the best protectors of flocks. Just keep in mind that they can be aggressive with people as well. I've also read that Iowa Blue roosters are very good at defending their flock from predators although I can't personally testify to this as I've never had one. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Personally, I would not count on the prowess of any rooster. I doubt he would survive a raptor attack. Once he's dead the hens are left totally unprotected.

I agree; at least with the largest raptors. When we lived in Texas, a pair of nesting Great Horned Owls were killing and eating the neighbors' cats. They would have made short work of any rooster. Where we live in Montana, we not only have Great Horned Owls but Great Gray Owls which are even larger, as well as Golden Eagles and Bald Eagles. I'm sure all of them would love nothing more than having a rooster dinner. I think the value of having a good rooster in this situations is not the ability of the rooster to fight such predators, but to give a warning of the danger to the flock.
