what season does roosters normally breed with hens?

I don't think the roos do it for eggs or chicks. Some will try to breed themselves to death if allowed. I had one who I think did just that. Between trying to cover too many hens and a fight with another roos one morning he just turned purple and dropped. I would assume the hens know when they want to hatch chicks and will only go broody when conditions are right. ( I would hope)
